About PCBDSN

Who We Are

The Pickens County Board of Disabilities and Special Needs was founded in 1972 by a group of families who envisioned a place where individuals with disabilities could develop meaningful skills, contribute to their community, and be recognized for their unique abilities. What began as Better Skills, Inc., a small program dedicated to highlighting individual strengths, has grown into a dynamic agency committed to empowering people through opportunity, inclusion, and community connection.

Today, our agency supports individuals with intellectual disabilities, autism, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and related conditions. With strong partnerships and dedicated staff, we provide person-centered services that promote independence, dignity, and choice.

Our Residential Services include fifteen Community Training Homes (CTHs), a Supervised Living Program (SLP) offering apartment-based supports, and the Jericho Project, an innovative partnership with Southern Wesleyan University that fosters inclusive residential and educational experiences.

Our Day Program Services provide diverse opportunities for personal growth and community engagement through day activities, career preparation, community service, and employment services.

Under new leadership, our agency is embracing a season of growth—reimagining each program, strengthening quality standards, and renewing our commitment to the individuals and families we serve. We are proud to build on a strong foundation while looking ahead to a future defined by excellence, collaboration, and opportunity for all.

Vision

Our vision is to provide quality services to citizens with special needs in partnership with the local community. We will encourage our friends to highlight their abilities.

Values

We value and appreciate our clients as we collaborate in meeting their specific goals and dreams.

We value our staff and board members who provide outstanding services to meet required and specific needs for the people we serve.

We value the teamwork and friendships with our families, volunteers, and our local community supporters.
